Turning it on and off is done with a simple tap of the button on top of the stylus, with no need for Bluetooth connection or additional apps. Before use, it is recommended to update your iPad to iOS 12.2 or a newer system and to disable the "Only Draw with Apple Pencil" option in settings if it was previously used.
